Down is the soft undercoating of geese and ducks, consisting of clusters of light, fluffy filaments growing from a central quill point.
Feathers are the outer growth of birds. Feathers consist of a hard quill shaft (or stem) with a series of fibres extending from each side.
Microfiber is soft and plush like down, but denser, trapping less air.
Down cushions are soft, sinky, malleable and very light. While they are puffy, down cushions don't have the heft and structure that most people want in order to fill out a cushion cover nicely.
Feather cushions are firmer, heftier, and more substantive due to the springy feather quills. They're perfect for filling out a cover and allowing for the 'chop', which makes them the most popular choice.
Microfiber cushions are soft and plush, but with more bulk and density than down cushions. They do fill out covers better than down cushions, but they don't trap as much air, so they don't 'chop' as well as feather or down cushions.
Duck down and feather is less costly than goose down because it is more abundant and less prized. There is a common misconception that goose material is higher quality than duck material, however loft is the measure of down quality – not species.
Duck down and feather has a greater potential of developing odour when exposed to moisture, but this is a relatively uncommon problem.
Opting for duck down or feather is a more cost-effective way to enjoy the benefits of a down or feather product!
All of our cushion shells are made 0.5" larger than advertised, to ensure a nice fit. Medium will be a more relaxed fit and will allow for a good chop.
Firm will be a fuller fit, with the cushion cover pulled more taut. It will still allow for the chop, but not as deep.
If you want a really full look, you can size up, in addition to opting for the Firm version.
However, the most common and popular is Medium in the same size as the cover.
